From Commercial To Inspirational: How To Make Valentine’s Day Count

Awareness of its commercial focus doesn’t prevent us from enjoying Valentine’s Day. Indulging each other with Valentine’s gifts is a gorgeous thing to do. However, our unity over globally-felt loneliness means that many need some inspirational support. Luckily, Valentine’s Day is around the corner, bringing with it an opportunity to really help. Read on to discover ways you can make this Valentine’s Day count.

On Valentine’s Day, talk, listen and laugh. Find out if there is a problem whereby you might be able to help.

2. Valentine’s Chores

After all, a little extra shopping for a neighbour, friend or relative is no biggie. Perhaps post a card or a paper to brighten their day. Do something you know will change a person’s day for the better.

3. Valentine’s Day Kindness

Never underestimate the power of a smile. This may sound cheesy, but some people see no one except, perhaps a stranger such as you as they walk down the road. When you pass by, say hello and smile. It’s all about the little things.

4.Deciding not to be a Social Media Meanie/Think Twice

day of love and kindness

Hopefully, most people will read this and think ‘well that’s obvious’. However, many do not. It is very easy to light a fire of hate on social media and watch your malevolence spread faster than the new variant. Lies are suddenly fact. Some don’t realise the impact this has on the person in the firing line. They don’t think they are to blame for suicide or for their family’s distress. Don’t be unkind. Think twice before you hit tag, abuse and post. Things are not always the way they seem and it’s far too easy to destroy a life. Let’s all try to be a little kinder on Valentine’s Day and beyond.

5 Steps For Helping Your Child Deal With Coronavirus

Hey Lovelies!

As Coronavirus sweeps the globe, it is vital we help our children deal with the pandemic. Trying to shield your child from the fear of the unknown is an impossible task. Hysteria from social media causes self-perpetuating panic and can frighten. Images that look like some horror movie to adults can only be terrifying to your child. Don’t let your child’s worries get out-of-hand. Here’s some advice and steps for helping your child deal with Coronavirus.

1.Science Videos

When it comes to younger children it is important to put their minds at rest but not over complicate things. By showing them age-appropriate science videos on germs, viruses and how to protect yourself, it will help to reassure them. A great one that explains Coronoavirus is by Dr. Michelle Dickinson, here.

Make sure you watch it first to ensure your child will find it educational and helpful.

 2.Science Experiments

5 steps for helping your child deal with coronavirus
Credit: Giphy/Free Gifs/Science

You can follow this up by doing fun science experiments. A good one on YouTube is demonstrating a bowl of water with some pepper in. The adult and child put a finger in the bowl which then gets covered in pepper. Next they both put some hand soap on that finger and place it back in the bowl. You can literally see the pepper disperse away. This is a great way to show how germs are quickly destroyed when you wash your hands and how effective hand soap/gels are. Check it out here.

3.Discuss

Sit down and talk to your child. Find out what they know and then explain the situation honestly, but in a child-appropriate manner so they understand and are reassured. This should quell any added anxiety they may be feeling.

4.Demonstrate How To Wash Hands

5 steps for dealing with coronavirus - hand washing
Credit: Wikipedia.org

Make this important process a fun one by choosing one of their favourite songs to sing to whilst they wash their hands. Show them how you wash your hands, singing along and then ask them if they can.

5.A Drawing

A good idea is to draw a small picture of a circle or heart on the back of their hands in the morning. Tell them by the end of the day the picture should be gone. If it is still there you will be able to assess how well, they are washing their hands.

Stay safe xx

Coronavirus: 8 Signs You Have More Than Just A Cold

Hey Lovelies!

With Coronavirus Spreading across the globe with startling agility, it’s time we all sat up and take stock. Read on to discover the 9 signs you have more than just a bad cold. Although the majority of people will recover, some sections of society are helpless. The sooner you identify or eliminate this virus as the cause of your illness, the better.

1.It Lasts Longer Than a Couple of Days.

Most bugs or colds run their course quite quickly. Within 48 hours you should be seeing some improvement. Should you reach day 4 and feel just as wretched, it indicates the illness may be something else. Along with Coronavirus, you should consider known illnesses such as chest infections, flu, strep throat and mono. Seek advice by calling 111.

2.You Have Been Abroad

The chances of your symptoms signalling red flags are significantly higher if you have recently returned from abroad.

3.Fever

High temperatures do not persist with a bug. Should you be suffering from a temperature of 100 degrees or higher for longer than 24 hours, seek immediate medical help.

4.Nasty Cough

Should your sore throat develop into a persistent cough, this is a big red flag. It may be a chest infection, or it could be the Coronavirus. Either way it is best to get checked. Do not go in to the Doctors; always ring for assistance.

5.Low-Grade Fever

Even a low-grade fever is a concern if it persists. Keep an eye on how long it is going on and act accordingly.

6.Difficulty Breathing/Wheezing

Coronavirus: 9 signs more than just a cold

Shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing are all indicative of serious reactions to Coronavirus or a chest infection. Seek assistance if this happens.

7.Excessive Thirst

Coronavirus: 9 signs its more than a cold
Credit: Wikipedia

When Coronavirus takes hold, it can develop into pneumonia. The onset of this causes a person to feel excessively thirsty. Left untreated, it can cause rapid deterioration, sepsis and organ failure.

8.Aching

Whilst many cases of Coronavirus cause milder symptoms, some do not. We do not know enough about the virus. However, if it has got you by the short and curlies, you will feel like you’ve done 10 rounds with Tyson Fury. Basically, you will know it means business and that you need medical intervention.

I cannot stress enough that while people do not follow the hand washing guidelines, or seek help even if symptoms are mild, the virus will continue to spread like its backside is on fire. Vulnerable people will inevitably catch it and suffer. Let’s all do everything we can to shut down this monster whilst we still can. xx

New Year’s Resolutions Easy Enough To Keep

Hey Lovelies!

Happy New Year to you all! 2019 seemed to come and go at warp speed, before last year’s resolutions had chance to leave the ground. So, I’m thinking this year’s resolutions need to be a tad more attainable. Here goes:

1.Let Go of The Past

Gif of letting go of the past, leonardo de caprio
Credit: Giphy

Trudging around like a camel carrying saddlebags crammed with more of yesterday’s baggage than you can deal, isn’t exactly going to propel you into any kind of worthwhile future. If (like me) you tend to torture yourself over the past, now is the time to let it all go. Give yourself a chance. It may just be okay!

2.Challenge Yourself

Gif of challenging yourself deborah meaden dragons den

There’s never been a better time to give yourself a challenge – something you have always wanted to do, learn or try. Life is short – don’t keep putting things off until tomorrow, because one day it will be too late.

3.Don’t Give Up

gif of not giving up, finding nemo
Credit: Giphy

This is one I will have to incorporate into a daily mantra. I’ve learnt that when you feel the least motivated and about as disheartened as it gets – this is the time to find some inner strength, pull yourself back up and keep on.

4.Drink WATER!

drinking water gif

Yeah, yeah. I realise this sounds ridiculous. But believe me – when you drink as much Red Bull as I do, drinking water is pretty important. I get how much H20 helps your body, brain and skin and so why does it feel like I am forcing down Devil’s blood or something? Seriously wrong. If anyone out there has struggled and overcome this problem, let me know. Maybe we could start a helpline. Say Yes to water!

5.Spend A Few Hours A Week On You!

gif of having time for you, pretty woman
Credit: Giphy

For me, every day is the same. I look after my children, my nan, work, clean, cook. Then should there be any trace of energy left in my being, I work some more. Well, the Cinderella days are over. I vow to give myself a few hours each week that are just for me. Be it a face mask and bath, an hour in the middle of the day to sleep or the book that I bought 6 months ago that is still sat looking sadly dejected on the shelf. Should you find yourself in a similar sorry state of affairs, now is the time to make a change. Life will roll along more smoothly if you look after yourself. So don’t feel guilty – you deserve it!

What are your New Year’s resolutions? Leave me a message in the comments below. xx

5 Tips For Avoiding Family Stress At Christmas

Hey Lovelies!

If the mere title of this piece (5 tips for avoiding family stress at Christmas) sends shivers of fear and dread through your very being, you need to read these tips. People start gearing up for Christmas by the beginning of November. We are bombarded with gift ideas from every direction and expectations get higher every year. Furthermore, families often fall out over where to spend the big day. If you let it, Christmas can become a nightmare.

By the time Christmas actually arrives, no one is even thinking about what the day is supposed to mean or why we celebrate. So, what can we do? Never fear; here are some great tips for those who foresee stress. Ensure your Christmas is pure happiness this year!

1.Be Kind To Yourself And Avoid Stress This Christmas

5 tips for avoiding stress at christmas - bekind to yourself gif
Credit: Giphy

Christmas is supposed to bring celebration of love and to show appreciation for those you love – in reality, it can sometimes bring dread and unsurmountable amounts of pressure. Families fall out. In fact, I do not know of a family that do not have issues. There’s no avoiding it. When there are family members you would rather not see – or who perhaps seem hell-bent on pushing you out – or who are already making plans that will inevitably cause you grief, read on.

Do not let it affect you. It’s not easy but it is simple. You can control how you act, and the enjoyment of Christmas will rest upon how effectively you deal with any situation. If there are family disagreements or ‘others’ are monopolising the festive period and the stress is too much, just let it go. It’s just one day. Enjoy yourself and have a little giggle in the knowledge that your Christmas will undoubtedly be more fun!

2.Schedule Some Me-Time

tips to Avoid stress: me-time gif
Credit: Giphy

This is so important. We spend so much time rushing around making sure everyone has their perfect Christmas, that we tend to forget ourselves in the process. This year, don’t let stress get a look-in.  Schedule some me-time.  It will make a huge difference to you and everyone around too!

3.Ask For Advice/Help

5 tips on avoiding family stress at Christmas: Gif on taking advice
Credit: Giphy

Should things get a bit too much to bear, do not soldier on in silence. Ask for help. Often by opening up and asking for guidance or help, the person close to you will be more understanding once aware of a problem. My nan’s phrase, ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’ is very true.

4. Remember What Christmas is About

5 tips on avoiding family stress at christmas gif kurt cobain

Being bombarded with adverts on the ideal Christmas and the undoubtable cost takes its toll on us all. Remember they are just adverts – no one has the perfect life. Don’t let high expectations deter you from what Christmas actually means and what it should be about. Be kind to yourself and others, spend time with those you love and don’t fret about how much you are spending. For those who may be struggling, remember that expensive gifts are often a novelty that get played once and then forgotten. It is so much more important and memorable when you give your time, with fun and laughter. There are literally hundreds of free party games you can play to mix up the day. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

5.Plan

If you know Christmas morning is going to be manic (who doesn’t?), plan ahead. Prep your Christmas breakfast and dinner as much as possible the day before. Place bin bags nearby to collect wrapping. Make sure your phone is charged for recording in the morning. Make a checklist of things you may need (batteries, etc). Bay think back to last year and think about all the stress-causing stuff. Then resolve any repeat issues by planning ahead. Job done!

Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

Hey Lovelies!

#Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

No matter what the skincare issue, there is guaranteed to be a product to assist you. AHAs /BHAs work on cell turnover; hyaluronic acid will plump up your skin, surging it with moisture; vitamin E aids in repairing, and retinol deals with those intrusive fine lines nobody likes. However, it is imperative to remember not to just slap on all of these together and think, “job done.” Mixing certain ingredients can deeply damage the skin, making it worse rather than better.

It is important to devise a signature skincare routine especially for your skin type and concerns. This may take a little time – but not doing it would be as crazy as buying all the ingredients for a 3 course luxury meal, grabbing a pot and throwing the squid in with the chocolate sauce, adding every other ingredient while you’re at it, and then expecting it to taste heavenly! Check out the following concoctions that should always remain a no-go union.

Vitamin A (Retinol) And Vitamin C

SkinCeuticals serum 10
Credit: Look Fantastic

The general rule of thumb is to apply retinol at night (as it can increase sun-sensitivity) and keep your vitamin C for the day. Vitamin C is an essential part of anyone’s skincare routine as it offers immense antioxidant value, providing that necessary protection against free radical damage. However, used in unison these can instigate dryness, redness and sensitive skin. An amazing vitamin C serum is SkinCeuticals Serum 10 (£80), http://www.lookfantastic.com

Retinol And AHA /BHA

esthederm retinol
Credit: Look Fantastic

When it comes to tackling the dreaded acne, diminishing lines or dealing with pigmentation, retinol would be your hero product. Additionally, AHAs /BHAs make fantastic exfoliators and cell regenerators; thus, should be a part of everyone skincare. But take note: applying these two warriors together is like initiating a fight club on your face. Expect at the very least some irritation and at worst, serious aggression and damaged skin. I love Esthederm’s Intensive Retinol Serum, (£49), www.lookfantastic.com

Vitamin C With AHA/BHAs

Paulas choice resist antiaging aha
Credit: Paulas Choice

This will quite simply, put a car-bosh on your pH balance, causing complete ineffectiveness of what you are applying. As pointless as spending 10 minutes locating Corrie on catch-up, pressing play and then leaving the house. I’m loving Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging 10% AHA Exfoliant, (£34), www.paulaschoice.co.uk

AHAs and BHAs

Basically, acid superseded by more acid – bad idea

Most dermatologists, beauty editors and experts will tell you that AHAs/BHAs, Vitamin C, E, Retinol and Sunscreen are all key ingredients. You can use sunscreen alongside vitamin C and E, no sweat.  But, as for the rest – take the above advice. Your skin will thank you for it.

Have an awesome weekend people xx

The Best Cleaning Hacks For Lazy Girls And Guys

Hey Lovelies!

A little secret – I can’t stand cleaning the house. This is down to part-laziness and part-despair, because let’s face it – cleaning is a never-ending thankless task. For me, it feels like the family have some kind of radar. It’s as if they wait until I have just finished hoovering, scrubbing, mopping and then pounce. Within minutes all making the house look decent, it is very quickly and effectively undone.

If I didn’t find it so soul-destroying and hideous I would be forced to admit the family have mastered the process of destruction to the point where it is an exceptionally talented art form (that in some parallel universe, might be admired). Not this one, though. If this sounds familiar, fear no more. I have discovered some awesome cleaning hacks that will not only clean beyond your wildest dreams but achieve a gleaming maison in a fraction of the time. Thank you, God,

1.The Dreaded Oven Rack

A gif of spongebag
Credit: Giphy.com

This is probably one of the worst jobs for me. Not so any more. According to EHow, all you need is white vinegar, baking soda and a scrubbing pad. So, I tried – and woah, it actually works!

Simply place the racks in the sink, spray them with vinegar, then cover them in baking soda and go and have a cup of tea. On your return to the kitchen for your tea top-up, cover them with hot water and leave for approximately 10 minutes. Finish your tea and biscuits then scrub off the grime (it takes literally no effort) Yay!

2.Pet Urine

Dogs on stairs
Credit: Giphy.com

So cute, i know. However, there’s ALWAYS a downside. There really is nothing worse than a urine-stained carpet, but thankfully there are two really good solutions that mean you don’t have to scrub away for hours on end, only to discover the smell or stain won’t budge.

Once you have blotted away as much liquid as possible with paper towels, either mix 50% white vinegar with 50% water and soak the area, or if this isn’t effective enough, mix some washing-up liquid with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and soak. The latter one is pretty invincible and will work on practically all carpets, mattresses, etc. Use a scrubbing pad to work into the stain, then cover the area with baking soda, rub with your scrubbing pad then hoover up. Hey presto!

3.The Mattress

A gif of throwing out a mattress
Credit: Giphy.com

I know, right?!? You even have to clean your mattress. Is nothing sacred? Apparently, this is quite important for those with allergies and asthma, and although the above gif looks like the perfect answer, I don’t fancy the effort this would probably take. So I am now taking note.

According to various online sources you simply need some baking soda, essential oil (optional) and a hoover. What could be easier? Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a tub of baking soda and sprinkle all over your mattress. Rub in the solution and then leave it alone for an hour (the perfect amount of time to watch your favourite programme). When an hour or so has passed, nip upstairs and hoover the mattress, then turn and look in slack-jawed amazement at your cleaning expertise.

Have you tried any of these cleaning hacks and what are your thoughts? Leave me a message in the comments below, and have a fantastic weekend people xx

6 Ways To Tackle Blue Monday

Hey lovelies!

We’ve all heard of Blue Monday – the day that falls on the third Monday of each January, every year. It is supposed to be (according to experts) the time when we are most likely to feel depressed/miserable/sad. This is probably due to the fact that we’ve spent a sh#t load at Christmas; we haven’t been paid; we have made resolutions that are beginning to take their toll; the weather is, at best, bleak and life generally sucks. Don’t fear my friends – here are 6 ways we can tackle that Blue Monday feeling and get back ahead of the game. Read on:

1.Breathe

nbc breathing out
Credit: Giphy

When it all gets a bit too much to bear and we are feeling miserable or anxious, there is something that we can all do at any moment to help ourselves. Simply close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Take in long, slow and deep breaths and repeat 10 times – everything will feel that bit calmer and become easier to deal with. #breathingworks

2.Laugh

Minions laughing
Credit: Giphy

OK, I’m not suggesting some Patch Adams theory of laughter overcoming all obstacles or illnesses, but there really is something to be said for this technique. When we are faced with adversity or stress, we all have a choice either to laugh or let sadness take over. Sadness and stress doesn’t solve anything – it just makes things that much worse. Choose laughter – even when you don’t want to, especially when you don’t want to. It will train your brain to gain a better perspective, and gradually life will become a bit more peaceful.

3.Talk

Feed me seymore gif
Credit: Giphy

Yes people, life is crap. But we are not alone in this. When life gives you a twist of lemon, talk to a friend, a colleague, a therapist, anyone. You will be surprised that even if you have someone there to listen and not necessarily advise, this will help relieve those Blue Monday symptoms.

4.Dance

The Simpsons
Credit: Giphy

I’m a great believer in dancing away your problems. You don’t even need to leave the house. Put your favourite upbeat songs on and just dance and sing for a while. If that is not your thing, do whatever is – maybe going for a run, bike ride or some meditation – it doesn’t matter – just do something to get rid of the negativity.

5.Plan

Sherlock with violin
Credit: Giphy

So, unless you are really fortunate, many of you (like me) will be broke right now. That said, this Blue Monday make plans for something you really want to do this year: the festival you don’t want to miss or a comedy club, or even a getaway somewhere. There’s no need to book it yet, just do some research and write down the steps you need to take to make it happen – realistic goals people, that your brain actually knows it can achieve. Then stick the plan of action on your fridge.

6.Avoid Depressants

Amy Schumer drinking
Credit: Giphy

Easier said than done, I know. But there is nothing that makes life that much crapper than when you are feeling blue and have a drink. In the same respect, take it easy on caffeine and sugar, or anything that will give you a short high followed by a massive crash. It’s never worth it.

Do you have any thoughts on Blue Monday? Leave me a message in the comments below – and have a good day people xx
