About Kate Somerville’s Transformative Turnaround Cream, Firm & Brighten, £77 (50ml), www.katesomerville.co.uk

kate somerville transformative moisturiser
L A Beauty

Ever since its launch, this luxurious overnight moisturiser has been flying off the shelves. The best-selling cream contains two key skincare ingredients, retinol and vitamin C. These components are proven to offer an array of anti-aging and skin-nourishing abilities, both immediately and long-term.

The reason this is such a sought-after night moisturiser is due to its outstanding brightening, firming and regenerative properties – and the fact that it is a lazy girl’s dream. You simply need to apply the magical formula and go to sleep. The star ingredients get together to beautify your complexion whilst you are busy dreaming about Thor!

Retinol

Retinol is a vital anti-aging component, but it is important to use a good source. The Transformative Turnaround Cream is great for retinol newbies as it is unlikely to cause noticeable dryness. For people in their twenties, Kate Somerville’s advice is to apply the moisturiser 1-2 times per week. For thirty-somethings’ use 3 times per week, and so on. However, it is important to always listen to your skin. Should your complexion seem irritated, reduce accordingly.

Kate Somerville and her team combined a powerful blend of pure retinol within this moisturiser. The result is a faster cell turnover, reduction of discolouration/pigmentation. Furthermore, you will notice significantly fewer fine lines.

Vitamin C

Another superhero component, vitamin C, is shown to greatly brighten and smooth the skin. This amazing cream includes pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Provided in a stabilised clinical formulation, it delivers incredible firming and softening results. The outcome is a complexion of sheer radiance.

Hyaluronic Acid

Pretty much everyone is aware of the secret skincare weapon, hyaluronic acid. This is included due to its ability to lock in moisture; thus, achieving a firmer and plumper complexion.

Wild Gooseberry Extract

Wild gooseberry extract is overflowing with antioxidants, ensuring your skin is thoroughly protected from free radical damage. Furthermore, the incredible skin-soothing properties diminish redness and signs of sensitivity.

The scent of the moisturiser itself is all-empowering. Should you love oranges, this zesty aroma will be right up your street. As you apply the luxurious treatment you just know it is going to be something special – and you won’t be wrong!

Conclusion

We applied the cream twice per week for several weeks. During this time skin showed a noticeable improvement. The texture and overall appearance are notable.

This moisturiser is definitely worth the investment for those concerned with aging or discolouration. However, to continue experiencing great results, it should be incorporated into your night-time routine and used over time.

We love this overnight moisturiser. It is great for those new to retinol and for those who want simple, yet effective results without the faff!

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Retinol Product

Hey, Lovelies!

We all know that retinol is one of those vital ingredients to combat the signs of aging. So, you’ve done your research and now have the right retinol product and strength for your needs. However, this is not where the need-to-know stuff ends. The vitamin A derivative is a complex thing to master – but, knowledge is definitely power where this skincare ingredient is concerned. Understand it fully and retinol will become your new BFF. There are some key points to consider in order to get the best results (and avoid a skincare crisis). Read on to discover the ins and outs of retinol use and ensure you get the most out of your product.

1. How Often Should You Use Retinol?

Credit: Giphy

The answer to this question varies according to your individual skincare needs, and of course how long you have been using this little hero ingredient. Using retinol too regularly can have adverse effects on the skin.

Age

Credit: Giphy

You should start thinking about using retinol in your thirties. The older you are, the thinner and less tolerant your skin will be. If you are used to your retinol product, it is okay to apply it a few times a week. Mature skin types should be using the ingredient no more than twice a week.

Retinol Newbies

Should you be new to this product; it is important to tread lightly. You will begin with low strength, testing the water, and only once per week. If you have no reactions, then gradually increase to twice per week, and so on.

Skincare Needs / Retinol Strength

how to get the most out of your retinol products
Credit: L A Beauty

If you have developed signs of aging, the aim will be to gradually increase the strength. (SkinCeuticals 1%, £71.99, www.cosmedic-clinic.co.uk) is the highest non-prescription product that I consider safe to use). If that doesn’t measure up, visit your dermatologist who may be able to write a prescription. It is important you don’t buy higher-strength retinol products online as you can end up damaging your skin. For a higher dosage always consult a dermatologist to ensure you are using a good product and the right strength for you.

Miracle Facial Oil, £85 (30ml), www.omorovicza.com

Sensitive Skin/Rosacea

Those with these concerns should avoid retinol altogether. Try the natural alternative, bakuchiol. This ingredient is sourced from the bakuchi seed and works to enhance collagen production whilst simultaneously tackling fine lines and even deeper wrinkles. The results are impressive, and it is quickly gaining a cult following.

I love Omorovicza’s Miracle Facial Oil. Formulated with bakuchiol, oils of sea buckthorn berry. Rosehip and sweet almond, this product achieves maximum benefits. Furthermore, the oil (of which I will refer to as ‘raindrops from heaven’) also includes Omorovicza’s patented Healing Concentrate. Basically, expect a seriously rejuvenated and smooth complexion.

2.Cleanse With AHAs

How to get the most out of your retinol products
Credit: Iherb.com

Studies have shown AHAs and retinol compliment each other and can dramatically enhance results. Try PCA Skin Facial Wash, £26.47 (70ml), www.uk.iherb.com I would opt for a lactic acid cleanser, as this is generally gentler on more mature skin types.

If your skin is slightly sensitive, it would be better to avoid this step. Instead, simply wash and dry your face before you apply your product.

3.Apply Moisturiser After Retinol

how to get best from retinol
Credit: Look Fantastic

Once you have applied your retinol product to your clean and DRY face, wait a few minutes and then add your moisturiser. I use CeraVe’s Facial Moisturising Lotion, £13 (52ml), www.lookfantastic.com

Opt for a moisturiser that doesn’t contain a plethora of ingredients. You need to be applying hyaluronic acid and perhaps ceramides/peptides, such as this all-singing formula. N.B: The product does not contain SPF.

 4.Apply SPF

spf for after retinol product

Never forget this component! You shouldn’t anyway, but particularly so when you have used retinol, as your skin will need the extra protection. I love UltraSun’s Anti-Pollution Face Fluid SPF 50+, £20.20, www.amazon.co.uk.

Stay happy and safe. xx

The Best Ways To Diminish And Prevent Crepey Skin

Hey Lovelies!

Recently, I have been asked a lot about crepey skin treatments that will actually work.  Age gives us so many gifts: experience, memories and wisdom. Oh yes, it also provides a generous supply of stiff joints, wrinkles and – wait – crepey skin, too! Hang on, what exactly is this age-related extra and how the HELL can we get rid of it?

Read on to discover the truth about this unwanted condition and how to best treat it.

What Is Crepey Skin?

It sounds like it belongs to a Halloween special and for good reason – it’s the stuff of nightmares. Crepey skin is basically sagging, wrinkled skin that affects the larger areas on your body. Imagine a really large wrinkle. Targeting thinner points on the skin, you may find them on the inner arms (around elbows and under the eyes). However, if you are really lucky, they can reach other places, too. In short, it’s a total let-down by your body.

What Causes This?

gif of aging friends
Credit: Giphy

The number one cause other than aging (as is usually the case) tends to be sun damage. However, dehydrated skin and losing weight can contribute to the issue.

How Can We Prevent Crepey Skin?

1.SPF

NeoStrata Sheer Physyical Protection SPF
Credit: Face The Future

I’ve said it before and I will say it again – a good SPF is the vital tool in our anti-aging mission.  Always choose an SPF in addition to your moisturiser and foundation (even when they include an SPF). I love NeoStrata’s Sheer Physical Protection SPF 50, £29.99, www.facethefuture.co.uk

2. Hyaluronic Acid

the ordinary hyaluronic acid

A key component to keeping hydration at optimal levels and locking in moisture. Hyaluronic acid will help in this quest. A great and affordable product is The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, £7.87 (30ml), www.amazon.co.uk

This amazing product contains ultra-pure, vegan hyaluronic acid!

3.Body/Facial Oils

Maringa oil is incredible for evening out skin texture, repairing and preventing tissue damage. The result is fewer wrinkles and thwarting the dreaded crepe paper look.

4. Moisturiser

When it comes to slowing down the aging process, moisturiser is one product not to forget. Apply in the morning and at night to keep pesky crepey skin at bay.

How To Get Rid Of Crepey Skin

The most effective treatments include:

Retinol

Ese retinol serumthederm inteniv

This ingredient will improve the appearance of skin texture and should be used regularly to achieve and maintain results. Do remember skin can be sensitive to retinoids and it can also further dry the skin, so always lather on the moisturiser and oils. I love Esthederm’s Intensive Retinol Serum, £49, www.facethefuture.co.uk

Face and Body: Laser

Visit your skincare clinic for laser treatment. A skin resurfacing laser will treat the areas of concern, triggering the formation of collagen production and diminishing the appearance of crepey skin. This can work out a tad pricey, but if you really want it gone this may be worth considering.

For The Neck: Cryolipolysis CoolSculpting (For Where There Has Been Excess Weight)

A tightening procedure generally administered to the neck or body where there are localised areas of fat. It targets and destroys the fat achieving good results.

Fillers

sculptra injections

Providing an instant plumping effect and stimulation new collagen production, the treatment may be costly, but will definitely do the trick (for a while). I feel that Sculptra is a good choice for such skin concerns.

Hey Lovelies!

Want the results retinol offers without the side-effects? Retinol’s days may be numbered! It’s time to discover the natural alternative, bakuchiol.

4.Goodbye Wrinkles

Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

Hey Lovelies!

#Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

No matter what the skincare issue, there is guaranteed to be a product to assist you. AHAs /BHAs work on cell turnover; hyaluronic acid will plump up your skin, surging it with moisture; vitamin E aids in repairing, and retinol deals with those intrusive fine lines nobody likes. However, it is imperative to remember not to just slap on all of these together and think, “job done.” Mixing certain ingredients can deeply damage the skin, making it worse rather than better.

It is important to devise a signature skincare routine especially for your skin type and concerns. This may take a little time – but not doing it would be as crazy as buying all the ingredients for a 3 course luxury meal, grabbing a pot and throwing the squid in with the chocolate sauce, adding every other ingredient while you’re at it, and then expecting it to taste heavenly! Check out the following concoctions that should always remain a no-go union.

Vitamin A (Retinol) And Vitamin C

SkinCeuticals serum 10
Credit: Look Fantastic

The general rule of thumb is to apply retinol at night (as it can increase sun-sensitivity) and keep your vitamin C for the day. Vitamin C is an essential part of anyone’s skincare routine as it offers immense antioxidant value, providing that necessary protection against free radical damage. However, used in unison these can instigate dryness, redness and sensitive skin. An amazing vitamin C serum is SkinCeuticals Serum 10 (£80), http://www.lookfantastic.com

Retinol And AHA /BHA

esthederm retinol
Credit: Look Fantastic

When it comes to tackling the dreaded acne, diminishing lines or dealing with pigmentation, retinol would be your hero product. Additionally, AHAs /BHAs make fantastic exfoliators and cell regenerators; thus, should be a part of everyone skincare. But take note: applying these two warriors together is like initiating a fight club on your face. Expect at the very least some irritation and at worst, serious aggression and damaged skin. I love Esthederm’s Intensive Retinol Serum, (£49), www.lookfantastic.com

Vitamin C With AHA/BHAs

Paulas choice resist antiaging aha
Credit: Paulas Choice

This will quite simply, put a car-bosh on your pH balance, causing complete ineffectiveness of what you are applying. As pointless as spending 10 minutes locating Corrie on catch-up, pressing play and then leaving the house. I’m loving Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging 10% AHA Exfoliant, (£34), www.paulaschoice.co.uk

AHAs and BHAs

Basically, acid superseded by more acid – bad idea

Most dermatologists, beauty editors and experts will tell you that AHAs/BHAs, Vitamin C, E, Retinol and Sunscreen are all key ingredients. You can use sunscreen alongside vitamin C and E, no sweat.  But, as for the rest – take the above advice. Your skin will thank you for it.

Have an awesome weekend people xx
