5 Tips For Flawless Foundation

Getting your foundation right can feel like a daunting task. To start with, there’s so many products out there and then it’s a seemingly never-ending mission to find the perfect one for your particular skin tone and type. During my years as beauty editor I have discovered some top tips that make this task as easy as putting on your shoes.

1.Define Your Skin Type

Basically, most people fall in to one of the following skin types: dry, combination and oily.

2.Think About Your Skin Colour

When you are buying your foundation, test a few products against your skin (and if at all possible, try to view it outside). You want the colour that best fits your own complexion, the one that soaks seamlessly into your skin as if it is invisible. You should not buy a different shade in an effort to boost or change you colour. That is what a bronzer is for.

3.Decide On Your Coverage

Before you buy, you need to think about how much coverage you want to get out of your foundation and how easy it is to build up.

4.Choose Your Foundation

Once you have decided your skin tone, type and how much coverage you want, you are ready to choose your foundation. Should you have aging or dry skin, opt for a blurring or hydrating product. I love Givenchy’s Blurring Foundation Teint Couture Balm (£31, Givenchy). Should you have combination skin, then Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup is just the ticket. For Oily skin types, opt for Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation, £32 (30ml).

5.Apply A Primer

Don’t go to all this trouble and then forget the primer! Your primer will help to reduce the appearance of imperfections and pores, providing you with a good base for your foundation. I love Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, £26, www.smashbox.co.uk
